Rosie opened her eyes, trying to get her bearings. Nan continued to enthusiastically beat the hell out of the door as Rosie shook Chris awake. She put her fingers to his mouth to stop him from saying anything until she heard Nan mutter under her breath about missing persons and walk away. As soon as the coast was clear, Rosie burst out laughing. "What's so funny?" Chris asked, not at all amused with nearly being caught with his pants down. "Oh honey, we're supposed to be meeting Nan and Hunter after the show. Guess we'll be a little late, huh?" The look on his face told Rosie that Chris clearly wasn't impressed about that piece of information either, but she chose to ignore that as she got up and headed for the bathroom to tidy herself up. An hour later Rosie & Chris walked into the restaurant to find Hunter and Nan already eating. "Sorry we're late," Rosie apologized as they sat down, "we just had to make sure Chris didn't suffer any ill-effects of his mishap tonight." Hunter threw his head back and burst out laughing. "What's so funny?" Chris demanded. "You two! It's us you're talking to and I know for a fact that shot was scripted, so where have you really been?" Hunter replied "I don't see where that is any of your business, Helmsley." Chris replied, sitting back on his chair and folding his arms across his chest. Hunter glanced at Rosie and at her slight nod replied. "Well as a matter of fact, it is my business." "And how do you figure that out? I may not be the cerebral assassin, but since when do you have claims on Rosie? Isn't Nan enough for you these days?" Nan grabbed Hunters arm to stop him from standing up and lunging at Chris. "Chris, there's no need to get nasty. I thought we were friends." Chris had the decency to blush. "I'm sorry, Nan. I didn't mean it" "Of course he didn't," Rosie chimed in, turning to glare briefly at Chris, "as you were saying Hunter?" "Right. Very recently I came across some information that pretty much blew me away." He began, grasping Nan's hand for moral support. "The only thing was this information didn't only affect me. When I told the other person we both agreed not to tell anyone else until…" "Come on Trips, get on with it," Chris interrupted. "I know you're famous for your long-winded orations but we ain't got all night," It was Hunter's turn to glare at Chris but he continued. "Anyway, we agreed not to tell anyone else until we'd gotten used to things ourselves but now we feel its time to share." Nan's glance alternated between Hunter and Rosie before she spoke. "Well share away, hun, you know you can tell me anything." Hunter stood and moved to stand behind Rosie's chair and placed his hands on her shoulders. "I found out that I have a baby sister and as fate would have it she's someone close to all of us." "Rosie?" Nan whispered, shocked almost speechless. "Yes, Rosie. Of all the people on this huge planet, my sister was right in front of me these past few years." Hunter replied, a huge grin lighting up his whole face. "Wow! I don't know what to say," Nan said, shaking her head. "You couldn't say anything that Hunter or I haven't already thought," Rosie smiled. "Believe me; it came as quite a shock to both of us." "I can only imagine how you both must have felt." Nan turned to Hunter as he sat back down next to her. "At least now you have someone besides me to worry about you. It's kinda nice knowing I'm not the only one." "Yep it's just what I need, someone else in this crazy business to give me ulcers," Rosie said dryly. Hunter and Nan laughed along with her, but Rosie noticed that Chris hadn't spoken since Hunter's announcement. "Chris, how do you feel about all this?" Chris refused to look her in the eyes. "I guess if you're ok with it, I'll have to be ok with it too," he replied, shrugging his shoulders. Rosie was not happy with his non-committal reply but decided to pursue the subject later when they were private. "Well I am happy about it, and that's why Hunter & I wanted to tell you and Nan about this together." Hunter proceeded to tell Nan and Chris the whole story of how his father met Rosie's mother while Rosie sat quietly and observed Chris. He hardly said a word and she also noticed that he sometimes got that far-away look in his eyes, indicating he wasn't really paying attention. She briefly puzzled over this before making a mental note to have a long talk with him before the night was over. When everyone had finished their meal, the four of them walked out into the warm night air to say their goodbyes. "Well, Rosie, it's been an interesting night," Nan commented, embracing the shorter woman. "It surely has," Rosie replied, returning the hug. "And I know I've made the offer before but if you're ever in the Tampa area, you're more than welcome to stay with us." "Thanks for that, who knows, maybe one day I'll just arrive on your doorstep." Nan turned to say goodbye to Chris. "Are you ok?" she asked quietly as she hugged him tightly. She had sensed his emotional withdrawal since Hunter had dropped his bombshell and knowing him as well as she did, she also knew the reason behind it. She wondered if Rosie was aware of certain events in Chris' past. "I'll be fine." He replied "and I'm really sorry I said what I did, I spoke without thinking." Nan reached up and kissed him softly on the cheek. "You're forgiven. Just do it again and I'll kick your ass." Chris laughed softly as he watched her walk towards Hunter's rental car. He turned to where Rosie stood wrapped in Hunters arms. They were talking softly and not for the first time that night, he felt like someone had kicked him in the gut. Surely to God history couldn't repeat itself, could it? |
