Kris was struggling with trying to keep her thoughts together today. She really wanted to call and speak to Dave again because she was so worried. She knew he was in flight by now, so it didn’t matter. Plus he’d lost another phone he’d told her when he called for the kids earlier. But that chat last night had been so worth it. The things he could still do to her with just his voice over the phone. Ooh, that should be illegal. She started to loose her focus just thinking about his smooth but oh so dirty voice. He said she did the same things to him. He told her how much she did to him. He showed her every chance he got, when he was home. Were other couples still like that after years of marriage? She didn’t really know, but she was happy they had found a way to make things work. Hmm…She’d put him to the test when he got home. She wanted to see him try to do what they talked about last night. Mmm…she was drifting again. She had so much to do, now the kids were off to school and she still had her youngest to see to. She knew she still had a low grade fever, but it had gone on for too long. She was really getting worried. She left her sleeping after seeing the other kids off to school. She checked on her just before her shower. She was still sleeping, still dry and still a little too warm. She’d let her sleep while she could. She had a feeling today was going to be a long tough day for both of them.

She would be ready to call the doctors office as soon as it was open. They needed to try something different, because the antibiotics weren’t working. If they said bring her in right away, she’d be ready. If they didn’t say that, she’d be ready to tear them a new ass. This had gone on too long and she was very worried. What if they didn’t know what to do? What if they said keep her on these meds? What if? She was full of ‘what if’s and was driving herself crazy. She had told Carrie her worries early this morning, it always helped to share them with her. She knew Carrie would be up, so wasn’t worried about that. Even if she didn’t have anything to say for comfort or wisdom, it was just helpful to be able to cry with her. Carrie had helped her get her day organized and gave her a list of things she should do while waiting to call the doctor’s office; she was so good at that. She had also made Carrie swear not to say anything just yet. Even though she didn’t like it, Carrie’d keep her word.

She was worried about Carrie too, but knew her best friend wouldn’t appreciate being mothered by her. It had been a long time since Carrie had taken any time for herself, instead choosing to focus on making the Batista family business a success. Thinking of Dave and his wrestling career in that context was odd to some people she knew, but it was the best way to describe their family’s approach to it. They enjoyed the successes and failures as a family. She knew it helped Dave to be able to share some of the burden of the details. His best friend and business partner Mike dealt with most of the details and long range plans, Wease handled the web stuff, she handled all the particulars to keep home running smoothly, and Carrie filled in where needed. In the end he was what made it a success, Dave and his desire to be the best and his love for the business. It had taken him some time to find out how to combine his passion of bodybuilding with his love of people. Being a bouncer was a simple fit, but not a good fit. She used to see him come home too many nights disgusted with people and the steps he needed to take to ensure others safety. He’s really just a big teddy bear, a big buff teddy bear to be sure, but a kind hearted one. She remembered meeting the rest of Evolution when they were first thrown together and realized they were all like that, big sweet guys. When she questioned Carrie if that was the norm, Carrie laughed at her, telling her no, she had just met the cream of the crop. There were some other very nice people that worked at WWE, but there were also a whole lot of snakes.

Kris wondered if Carrie was missing her own life since she had jumped into the family business with both feet. But she also knew that Carrie rarely did anything half way, it was all or nothing with her. It always had been, even where they were small. Looking back she remembered when they were picked on at school, so much so that Carrie wanted to fight back, but her dad persuaded her to walk away. But he did enroll her in Taekwon Do. Carrie had found something that she excelled in, regardless of her size. That was the first step in a long journey for her, she remembered. Kris had also taken the class since they did everything together, but she just learned very rudimentary skills. Carrie followed her passion and enrolled in some of the other disciplines eventually.

Look how far we have come, from two little lost souls in Mrs. Sanders’ class, she thought. Through some very tough times, they were still friends. They knew each other wasn’t perfect, but accepted the other as beautiful. Now, if she could only get Carrie to accept herself as beautiful, she’d really be happy. Kris remembered a time in her friend’s life when she had found that special someone that made her feel beautiful “inside and out” was how she phrased it. She knew that special someone was unavailable to her and had been for a long time. She hoped Carrie would find someone like that again.

***
Thinking of Carrie feeling beautiful made her recall Dave’s words to her after he had met Carrie for the first time. They were eating one of their many meals they cooked together at his apartment.

“She’s gorgeous, but so different from you” he had said with wonder in his voice. He assumed that she knew she was gorgeous already. He had told her many times by then how he felt about her in many ways. He had done some very romantic things for her. He still did when she was least expecting it.

She also remembered her conversation with Carrie after that first meeting later that night over beer floats in her kitchen. It was their favorite treat to combine the best of both worlds; beer and ice cream. Carrie used vanilla when she made beer floats; Kris still used her butter pecan. Carrie liked to try different beer, instead of using flavored ice cream. Both had their bowls piled high, in anticipation of some serious girl talk. Killer was dozing on Kris’ lap, now that she’d settled down after making her creation.

“Dear God he’s a big boy,” Carrie had said with a big naughty grin, with her beer in one hand and a spoon full of “stuff” in the other. Kris flushed at the implication and asked what she thought of him.  “He seems like a nice guy, really cares about you. Said his kids adore you,“ she replied, taking a long drink of her beer.

“His kids adore me? I didn’t know, they’re so shy around me,” she said surprised and delighted by the news. Kris was trying a new way to enjoy her float, half beer, half ice cream, instead of less beer, more ice cream. So far, so good she thought.

“That’s what he said. Don’t think he’d fib about that, knowing we’d talk, do you?” Carrie was getting serious about tackling her float.

“No, you’re right. Um, there’s something else I want to ask you, but it’s really embarrassing,” Kris stammered, setting her spoon down.

“Oh dear, why me?” Carrie rolled her eyes in mock dismay. She set her beer down. She could see Kris struggling with something, getting hesitant, not knowing how she wanted to say whatever it was.

“Sweetie, what it is? It can’t be that horrid, very little can gross me out, you know that. What we’re eating should tell you that,” she laughed.

“Well, it’s about something I hope you can help me with, considering…” she looked down into her bowl.

“Considering? That sounds ominous. His kids love you, he loves you, I am guessing you love him, so what’s the worry?” Carrie was trying to be helpful, but it wasn’t working.

“I’m so afraid,” she wailed finally.

“Sweetie! Afraid of what? It looks like a go from this side of the table,” Carrie told her as she picked up her beer again.

“Well, I worry because of Alan,” she confessed.

“What? What does that asshole have to do with this?” A horrible thought had crept in.

“I’m worried that things won’t be …right,” she pleaded for understanding from Carrie.

With an incredulous laugh Carrie said, “You mean you haven’t taken that big boy for a test drive yet? Dear God! What the hell? The doctors said everything was fine on your last visit, right? She got a quick nod as response. “So, why the hell are you here with me, drinking beers and eating ice cream? Shit, I’d be testing that boy’s stamina if I were you.”

“You don’t think…?”

“He’s a grown man, he knows. And if he needs a bit of guidance, go for it! Shit, you amaze me. You don’t hesitate with some of the world’s biggest assholes, but this one? Sweetie, are you sure you’re feeling alright? Maybe you need another beer?”

Another thought had just occurred to Carrie, “He let himself go through that shit tonight without you two sleeping together? He’s got some brass ones, that’s for sure. That or he must love you.”

They drank some more beers, finished up their floats while the conversation got raunchier. They had a great time that night debating the finer points of men and sex in general. A few days later she did take him “for a test drive” as Carrie called it.
