David heard the familiar roar of Carrie’s motorcycle pulling up to his house on the warm summer afternoon. “Sounds like Lil’ Sis is here,” he said to his work out partner, Mike.

“Really,” Mike smiled at the thought.

“Sounded like her bike. No too many sound like that. Were you expecting her,” David asked his friend.

“No, but it’s always nice,” Mike said as he lost himself in the thought of her unexpected visit.

No one else was home, so she let herself in. She knew where they were and she was furious. Damn, how could she have been so fucking stupid? She pulled off her helmet and left it on the kitchen table. She slipped her shades into the neck of her shirt as she tried to calm herself. Damn, she was going to kill him. No wait, she was going to fucking kill him. She started down the stairs and the closer she got, the more irritated she became. How stupid did he think she was? Just around the corner, standing right in the middle of the gym, looking smug as hell, he looked up at her and smiled.

David saw her face first and realized this wasn’t going to be good. He didn’t think he had done anything dumb recently, but…Mike looked up as she walked in and smiled at her. Oh man, he has no idea, David thought. He was pretty sure that Mike was cooking for her, but that was all. Kris would’ve known if more was going on. Mike set his weights down so he could talk to her. She didn’t look at David or say anything until she stood right in front of Mike.

“You fucking asshole!” she said as she reached up and slapped him hard across the face, spinning his head to his shoulder. She turned around as quickly as she came in and left without a backward glance. Mike stood still for a moment, confused. He’d never seen her pissed off before, pretty sure he didn’t want to see it again. He reached up and rubbed his cheek and jaw on the right side of his face as he slowly opened and closed his jaw, checking for damage. He looked to his buddy to make sure he didn’t just dream it. David shook his head, indicating he had no idea what the hell that was about. Mike started to leave, but David stopped him.

“Don’t chase her,” Dave said as he grabbed his buddy’s arm. “You’ll just piss her off more. Trust me. She’s mad at you, but don’t make it worse by chasing her. She doesn’t like to fight, believe me. Give her some time then go see her, but make sure to give her plenty of time,” he explained to his hurt and confused friend. David noticed he had a hell of a hand shaped welt on his cheek and jaw.

“How can I find out what she’s mad about if I don’t talk to her,” Mike asked. He was still trying to figure out what just happened.

“Talking to her is fine, just not now. She’ll tell you what she’s mad about, don’t worry about that,” he smirked. Inside he was thinking, welcome to the most stubborn and confusing woman on the face of the earth. He felt bad for Mike, knowing he had never dealt with anybody like her before.

Several hours later, Mike knocked on her door with dinner as a peace offering. She answered his knock and let him in, without speaking or meeting his gaze. He thought it was a hopeful sign that she didn’t slap him again. He put their dinner on plates and brought them to the main living area. He gave her a plate with some utensils he had stuffed in his pocket. She accepted his offering in silence. She did eat all of her food, he noticed. Once she cleared away their empty plates and came back to the couch, she looked like she was ready to talk.

“Can you tell me why your whole god damn family thinks we’re sleeping together,” she asked him with a sigh as she sat back on the couch and pulled her legs up.

“What the hell are you talking about,” he asked as he looked at her small form sitting at the opposite end of her couch. He had no idea where that shit came from.

“Oh gee, a little old lady called me today and told me she was Mike’s grandmother and started asking me all kinds of nosey question, mostly about babies and when were we going to have some,” her voice had risen as she finished. The shock of that phone call made her feel like a truant child. Where the hell did those feelings surface from?

“No shit? I don’t know where she got that. The only thing I have said to my family, my mom, was that I might be bringing someone to the family picnic. I didn’t give anyone a name, and I sure as hell didn’t tell my mom we were sleeping together,” he finished, he was angry too. Damn his family, damn his mom for knowing him too well, he thought.

“So why is your grandmother calling and asking me about babies, weddings and all kinds of other crazy shit,” she asked him as she raked her hair again.

“I have no idea. My grandma is from Poland and she thinks it’s her business to know everyone else’s business. She tells me it’s some Jew thing as an excuse. I don’t be-” was all he got out before she cut him off.

“She’s Jewish? Shit, why didn’t you say so? That I do understand,” she smiled her understanding at his confusion.

“You do,” he was even more confused, as his knotted brows attested. Why was she always so confusing, he wondered.

“Yeah,” she admitted. Some of her comments made more sense in that context, she realized.

“My grandma likes to call us all lost sheep,” he said as he shook his head remembering many family gatherings. His confusion about his grandma’s phrase was evident.

“Lost sheep, that’s a good term to use,” she mused, almost to herself. “Listen Mike, I’m really sorry I slapped you today. I was angry, but that’s no excuse. I’m sorry, I hope I don’t do that again,” she said quietly as she met his eyes.

“You pack a hell of a punch there, little lady,” he grinned in to her green eyes. She was looking in to his eyes and watched his need for her surface. She blinked in surprise. She had no idea that was how he felt about her. Her throat tightened as she tried to swallow. As she looked at him, her heart started to pound. He was so reserved around her, other than that one little kiss a few weeks ago. What the hell?

She leaned over to him and said, “I am so sorry. You didn’t deserve that,” and kissed him.

At first it was a gentle, soft kiss but his need fueled it and it caught fire faster than she expected. She melted into his embrace, curling herself into his strong arms. He pulled her in to his lap and explored her mouth with his gently probing tongue. His hands found her hair. She felt his fingers on her neck, as he gently massaged her. He eventually wrapped her arms around his neck, picked her up and carried her up the short flight of stairs to her bed. Her heart pounded, she knew that her need matched his. After he set her down gently on her bed, he rumbled, “You sure?” She reached out a hand to him and pulled him down to her…

He was awake as he turned over the evening’s events. He could hear her steady deep breathing and knew that she was asleep in his arms. I am the luckiest man alive, he thought. He couldn’t believe he was in her bed, finally. He thought about the night, savoring every detail. He couldn’t help himself as he recalled one of his favorite songs lyrics, “I’ll make ya mine some day. Some how, some where, some way.” Yup, he was a lucky man.

She woke in the darkness, listened to him sleep, felt his body next to hers. She never knew it could be like that, so gentle, yet so fiery. She thought back to his words to her as he drifted off to sleep. He kissed the top of her head and whispered, “I love you.” Shortly after, she heard him sleep. He didn’t really mean that, she knew. Anything said during or right after sex didn’t count, everyone knew that. Just hearing him say those words to her shocked her. She cursed herself for even daring to think about it. The man she had secretly wanted and loved for years, telling her he loved her. It was just too foolish to even consider.

She recalled the first time she met him. It was shortly after Kris had introduced her to David. She was staying at Kris’ apartment, sharing the couch with Killer. She got up early and took Killer out, as usual. While she was out with him, she realized she left her cell phone in Kris’ car the previous night. After she took the dog back inside, she grabbed Kris’ keys and went to get her cell out of the car. She was digging underneath the seats, laying on the floor, behind the front seat and looking under them, thinking it might have slipped down. She had already looked around the front, so this was her last place. She heard quiet laughter walking closer to her, quiet male voices chuckling.

“Hey, do you think those feet come standard,” a male voice that she didn’t recognize said.

“Um, I’m pretty sure they’re an add-on, a recent add-on,” David’s voice said. “Carrie, what are you doing to Kris’s car,” he asked her once he was close.

She looked up at him from her uncomfortable position and said, “I lost my phone and I think it might be in here. But I can’t seem to find it,” she admitted sheepishly. “I give up,” she said as she climbed out of the back seat and stood up. “What are you doing here at this hour, David? Kris is still asleep because of her late shift last night.”

“Um, I wanted to leave something for her, on her car as a surprise,” he said. She remembered he blushed after he told her.

“Oh, okay. I won’t say a word,” she assured the big man. She looked from one big man to the other and thought, damn is there something in the water here or what? They seemed to have grown a lot bigger than when she used to live here.

David noticed her questioning look and said, “Carrie, meet Mike. Mike, Carrie is Kris’ sister.”

Mike took her hand and said with a wink, “Nice to meet you Carrie. I am happy to say I am not Dave’s brother. We’ve just known each other for ever.” He grinned at her as he said it. David put a note and a red rose on Kris’ windshield under the wiper and turned to his friend and said, “I’m sure the gym’s open by now. See you later, Carrie. Hope you find your phone.”

“Nice to have met you, Mike. See you later David,” she said. She hadn’t realized she had been holding her breath until she let it out, after they left. She knew then that she found Mike very interesting, his pale blue eyes, quiet voice and one hell of a body. She had asked Kris about him later and found out that he had a longtime girlfriend, so she knew he’d always just be a fantasy, but what a fantasy to have.

Now she had that same man in her bed sleeping, after giving her an evening filled with more orgasms than she had in the past several months. It was just too much to believe. She was tired, but it was a good tired. Every inch of her body had been loved, she smiled at the memory. Would he remember what he told her just before he went to sleep? Probably not, so she had better pretend she never heard it. She didn’t want him to feel obligated. She knew that Lisa had been gone for a while and she assumed she was convenient for him. He hadn’t shown a spark of interest until now. She’d just act as if she was okay with all of that. She closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep as she told herself none of it mattered.

He woke up and looked over, to make sure it hadn’t been a vivid dream. No dream, she was still curled up next to him. He loved looking at her, he always had. But now he had the leisure to really look at the woman that had haunted his dreams for years, he finally admitted. He looked at her as he saw her freckles across her nose and how he loved them. He remembered his surprise when he first touched her hair and found it soft. His fingers reached out and touched a ringlet of her hair and twisted it, savoring the feel of it between his fingers. He loved the way she crinkled her nose when she laughed. He knew he was smiling like an idiot, but he couldn’t help himself. This is how it’s supposed to be, that other shit with Lisa wasn’t healthy, not love, he reflected. He wanted to do something special for her this morning, but he didn’t know what. He did know he wanted her to sleep as long as she could, since she never got enough to keep her going through the weekly grind of travel. He reluctantly slid his arm away from her and peeled himself from her peaceful form. He slowly eased out of her bed, and looked around for his jeans. What the hell where they doing way over there, he thought. Oh yeah, he remembered with a wicked grin.

He was still trying to formulate some plan as he walked quietly out of her room and pulled the door to. He hoped to keep the noise down so she could sleep. He looked at the time and saw it was still early. He got the coffee maker going, so he could wake up a little, and shake the sleep from his foggy brain. He looked around at her condo and realized she didn’t have any color, everything was pale. The beginning of an idea was formed, as he drank a large glass of water and waited on the coffee. He knew he could grab his shoes, but where was his shirt? He crept back into her room. He could only see the top of her head peeking out of the covers. She had curled up into an unimaginable small form in the middle of the bed. He wasn’t sure where his shirt went, but he didn’t really need one, it wasn’t cold. They’d still let him in without one, right? That was just restaurants that wouldn’t serve you without shoes and shirt. Well, he had it half right, he thought happily. He knew he better wipe his grin from his face before he went out, but wasn’t sure he’d be able.

He remembered spotting something just outside her door. After a quick look to make sure he was right, he went to get something to cut one with. He finally found a sharp knife and cut a rose for her. He debated about cutting two, one for her pillow and one for the note, but there was really only one nice one. He crept back up to her room and left the rose on the pillow he had used, hoping she’d see it as she woke up. He jotted a quick note for her, and propped it against the coffee maker, in case she woke while he was gone. He gulped his scalding coffee down so he could get started on his plan. Just before leaving, he remembered to pour himself a large travel mug of coffee. He needed it since he was dead ass tired.

He ended up at the local grocery store. He walked in bare chested and pretended that it was an everyday occurrence. The lone checker stared at him as he walked all the way to the back. He found what he needed and was heading back to the check stand when he heard his name.

“Uncle Mike, what are you doing here,” his nephew asked him. His confusion was evident. Dave’s head popped up over the aisle and took one look at him, what he had in his hands and laughed.

“Yeah, Mike. What are you doing here,” he teased. “And where’s your shirt? I don’t know if they will sell you that stuff without a shirt,” he was going to tease him mercilessly, Mike knew.

“Um, I had to make a quick run to the store for some stuff,” he said to his nephew. “Why are you here? Shouldn’t you be in school?”

“I forgot I was supposed to bring some stuff today for a project, so Dad had to drive me,” he said quietly.

“Kinda like his uncle, don’t ya think?” David asked his buddy as he continued to chuckle at his discomfort. Mike pulled a face at him, but kept quiet. He wasn’t up to verbally sparring with Dave right now. David noticed that he didn’t rise to the bait and let it go. The lone checker was watching all of it from the safety of her check stand. She was accustomed to seeing strange things in the morning, but this one was a first, even for her.

Once David and Mikie had paid for his supplies, David turned around to Mike and said, “Say hi to her for me, will ya.” Mike heard him chuckling to himself as he walked out the door.

Carrie woke to the smell of coffee and bacon? Did she really smell bacon? She reached over blindly to see if he was still there. She wasn’t surprised that he left; she was just a convenience to him anyway. She knew she needed to take a shower to help wake her dead ass up. She flipped the covers back and dragged her ass to the bathroom. She turned on the water in the shower on hot and climbed in. She stood under the pounding spray for several minutes, just letting it wash away her aches. She couldn’t remember the last time she felt so exhausted after sex. Her whole body felt like one big bowl of jello. Thinking back on last night she had images of him looking at her and smiling as she reached for him, images of his muscles flexing as he loved her, images of her touching him and finding him warm and softer than she could imagine. She expected him to be hard, but he was soft to her touch. Don’t think about it. He’s gone and you were just a convenient fuck for him. After staggering back out of the bathroom, she grabbed his shirt to wear. She loved his scent and wanted to remember it even with him long gone. She grabbed a pair of comfy boxers and pulled her fingers through her hair, preferring not to mess with it this morning, she was just too tired.

She felt as ready to face the day as possible and walked downstairs to her main living area. She hoped she had smelled coffee, she could certainly use some. Maybe he made some before he left? She turned the corner from her bottom step and stopped. She couldn’t believe the site that greeted her. She was speechless. Flowers, everywhere! Where did he get all of them and how? No one had ever given her so many flowers before. Her whole downstairs seemed to be covered in flowers; roses, violets, petunias, and her favorite, sweet peas. She didn’t see him, but she hadn’t moved from her spot either. The scent was almost over powering. He came around the corner from the kitchen and saw her. Her surprised face was better than any reaction he could have hoped for. He set his coffee down and walked over to her.

“Hi, babe. I thought we could use a little color today, what do you think,” he asked her with a soft smile. She still hadn’t said anything, but he could see tears start. “Oh, don’t cry. I don’t want you to cry. I want you to be happy, that’s all I ever want. Please don’t cry,” he asked her as he took her into his arms.

“Mike, I don’t know what to say other than th…th…thank you,” she said as tears streamed down her face. She buried her face in his chest. She knew that she was making a fool of herself, but couldn’t stop.

“You don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to,” he said as he led her gently to her couch so she could sit down. She looked around and saw even more flowers. She couldn’t stop herself from crying because it was just so overwhelming and unexpected. She had told herself last night that it didn’t matter, but it was a lie.

“Carrie, let me get you some coffee. I have your favorites for breakfast, if you’re up to it,” he informed her gently. When he brought back coffee, he sat next to her on the couch because he wanted to be close to her. He didn’t want her to cry, but knew it probably wasn’t going to stop anytime soon. He put his arm around her and pulled her close.

She accepted her coffee from him and asked, ”Why? Why did you do all this for me?”

“I wanted to make you happy because I love you,” he said simply, as he flashed his dimples at her. She almost dropped her cup. Did he just say he loved me? She set her coffee down and climbed into his lap and clung to him and sobbed. He held her tenderly and let her cry. He gently rubbed her back as she wept. He didn’t know what else to do, her response was not what he expected.

“Carrie. Babe, I don’t want to make you cry again, so please tell me why so I don’t do this again,” he asked her.

She pulled her head away from his chest long enough to say, “All this is so unexpected. I didn’t think for a minute you…you…loved me.” There, she said it and buried her face again.

“Last night didn’t prove that for you,” he asked her. She shook her head. “Damn, I guess I need to practice some more,” he chuckled.

“No, that’s not what I meant. I just thought that since you didn’t seem to care until last night that I was just convenient,” she said through fresh tears as she tried to bury her face again.

He put his fingers under her chin and tilted her face up so he could look into her eyes, “Carrie, there is one thing you’re not and that is a convenience. I didn’t want to scare you away, like I almost did when Ethan was born,” he tried to explain. He could tell she wasn’t convinced.

She wasn’t sure that she was finished crying for the day, but decided to release her death grip on Mike, finally. She wasn’t even sure how long she had been in his lap, but he had held her and just let her cry. Why was she such a cry baby recently? She seemed to be sobbing at the drop of a hat. She was even crying at sappy commercials, she admitted to herself.

She took a deep breath and looked up at him and said, “Thanks for letting me be a big baby all over you. I’m so embarrassed; I don’t know what’s going on with me.”

He looked at her, and she could see his eyes soften before he said, “Babe, that’s what I’m here for.” She frowned as she thought about that, turning those words over, trying to remember who else had said them to her recently. She reluctantly got off his very comfortable lap and grabbed her coffee. She took a sip and realized it was cold. She pulled a face and set it back down. It took her a moment to understand how much effort it must have taken to transform her quiet downstairs into a floral garden.

Mike stayed on the couch and watched her look around. He enjoyed her noticing all the flowers, knowing that she didn’t see all of them the first time. She shook her head as she saw all of it.

“How did you get all of this? Where did you get all of this,” she asked him in wonder.

He smiled as he got off the couch to get fresh coffee and didn’t answer her immediately. When he turned away from her, Carrie saw for the first time some of the evidence of their passionate night. It was written on his back, loud and clear for everyone to see, by her fingernails.

“Um Mike? What shirt did you wear on your shopping expedition,” she asked him while he was getting their coffees. Shit, she couldn’t believe herself sometimes.

“I couldn’t find mine, so I went without. I can see why I couldn’t find it, you had it. It looks like a huge dress on you, by the way,” he smiled.

“Um, have you looked in a mirror yet today,” she asked him as he carried their fresh coffees to the couch.

“No, its one of the joys of having my hair this short,” he said as he rubbed his hand over his hair. It didn’t change that much, just stuck up a little in a few places.

“Do me a favor and go look, and tell me what you see,” she asked him. He didn’t understand what the big deal was. “Use the mirror in this bathroom, it’ll be big enough.” He did as he was asked and flipped the light on. Carrie followed him in. He could see she was trying hard not to laugh, but didn’t know why. “Okay, now turn around and face me, then look at your back.”

“Oh shit,” was all he could say.

“Um yeah, and you went out like that,” she asked. He nodded. “Please tell me you didn’t meet anybody you know.”

“Oh shit. That bastard didn’t say a damn thing. No wonder he was laughing at me,” he said.

“Who?”

“Dave. I met them at one of the first stores. Mikie had to get some supplies for school and I ran into them. He didn’t say a word to me about it, other than tell her I said hi.”

“So much for being discreet, eh?” Carrie just shook her head. She was normally fairly private about her bed partners, but it didn’t look like that was going to be the case this time.

“Honey, I don’t want to be discreet. I don’t give a shit who knows. I love you and want to let everyone else know too,” he grinned at her.

“Even your grandmother?” she teased from the doorway.

“Yeah, even her, when you’re ready,” he sighed. He looked at her as she stood in the bathroom door, looking adorable in his huge shirt. “I think I might be getting cold, can I have my shirt back?” Her eyes went wide, she saw his devilish grin and shook her head at him as she set her cup down. “Don’t make me hurt you,” he teased her. She backed out of the door, and ran away from him with a giggle. He caught her a few strides later and picked her up.

She squealed with laughter and said, “Put me down.”

He just smiled and shook his head. Now that he had her, he wasn’t going to let her go. He brought her over to the couch so she could stand but he kept his arm around her hips so she couldn’t run. From her new perspective, she was a little taller than him and she wanted to take advantage of the situation. With a very wicked grin she reached for the bottom of his shirt and pulled it up and over her head. She heard his breath catch, and looked at him. His need for her was evident in his hot gaze. He wanted her and she loved it. She didn’t know how or when it happened, but she was going to enjoy him while she could.

After he ‘punished’ her for all the stripes she put on his back, he lay next to her and grabbed one of the closest flowers. He traced her back with one of the flowers. He enjoyed the movement of it on her smooth skin. She was on the edge of sleep when he leaned down to her and whispered, “I love you.”

He didn’t know that this was how love felt. It was so strong, almost too strong for him. He knew that other people had described feelings like this, but he just figured he must’ve been immune or something. He had just been with the wrong woman, he realized.

David came in from the garage, looking for his wife. He couldn’t wait to tell her. Where was she, she wasn’t in the kitchen or living room. He thought maybe she was upstairs with Melissa. He took the stairs two at a time, even though he chastised the kids for doing exactly the same thing.

“Kris, you’re not going to believe what the big kids have been up to,” he said as he smiled at her.

“What’s that honey,” she asked with Melissa in her arms. “We have to have breakfast, so tell me while I get it ready. Lissa felt like sleeping in today, so we’re a little behind.”

Once back in the kitchen, he said, “Melissa isn’t the only one sleeping late this morning, I bet,” he grinned. She looked at him, took in his grin and waited for him to finish. She could tell he was busting at the seams to share something. “Guess who Mikie and I ran into at the store this morning.” She shook her head as she continued to get the baby’s cereal and juice ready. “Mike”

“Mike? What’s he doing at the store so early,” she asked him as she wiped her toddler’s sticky fingers.

“Buying dozens of flowers and sporting some serious claw marks,” he chuckled. She tuned quickly to him, to verify she understood what he had just said. He nodded and grinned.

“Are you sure,” she asked.

“Yeah. Remember I told you she came over while you and Lissa where at the doctors? Well, he must have taken my advice and given her some time before he went over last night.” He couldn’t help his smile as he remembered his buddy‘s discomfort at seeing him and Mikie at the store.

“How could you see the damage,” she wondered.

“He forgot to put on a shirt.” His grin got bigger.

Her mouth curled up as she said, ”Maybe he couldn’t find it or someone else was wearing it,” she asked. She knew she’d talk to Carrie, but she’d wait until Carrie called her this time. “Very interesting, don’t you think?”

“Oh yeah. Poor bastard,” he smirked.

She looked at her husband sharply, ”Why do you say that?”

“He’s not gonna know what the hell hit him, honey,” he explained. She smiled her understanding.

“Think he can take it,” she teased.

“I don’t know, but it’s going to be fun watching him try, don’t you think?” He knew his best friend, and he knew he had never experienced anything like his little sister in law.

***

“Babe, wake up. You’ve been sleeping a long time and you need to wake up. I have another surprise for you.” He was rewarded by one green eye opening. The other might have been open, but the blanket was covering her face.

Was she dreaming? Here was a big beautiful man in need of a shave, half dressed, telling her that there was another surprise. She must still be dreaming, nothing like this normally happened to her, particularly not with this beautiful man.

He reached up to pull the cover down gently. “C’mon, time to wake up. At least for a little while then I’ll put you to bed again,” he smiled at her confused look. He could tell she wasn’t awake yet, and was still trying to get her bearings. He thought of a nice way to help her with that. He leaned over and kissed her, long and slow, just enough to wake her up but not too much to make him loose focus. Her hands reached up and wrapped around his neck after a few moments.

“Oh, can you wake me up again like that? Hang on, let me pretend to be asleep and you can do that again,” she teased him. She took a quick look around. “I don’t remember going to bed, when did that happen,” she asked him.

“Yeah, I moved you when you were sleeping. I thought you’d get better sleep in here,” he admitted with a slight shrug. She was amazed that she had slept so long today. She had used a lot of energy in between naps, she knew.

“I slept through that? Where did these flowers come from, you didn’t go out and get more did you?”

“No, I just brought some of them up here so you could enjoy them.”

“I think I told you this before, but thank you for spoiling me. I could really get used to it,” she said as she smiled at the man who suddenly seemed to have become her nurse, protector, private chef and lover.

“Didn’t I tell you, that’s my master plan? So, what do you think about dinner? Any ideas,” he asked the little lady still in bed.

“What time is it?”

“It’s a little after six.”

“What? Six pm!” her eyes went very wide as she absorbed the news. “I need to get up, I have stuff to do, nothing can get done when I’m being a lazy ass all day,” she said as she started to get up.

“Carrie, stop,” Mike said.

“What? I have too much shit to do to be so damn lazy. I can’t believe you let me sleep this long. What were you thinking,” her voice was raised as she looked at him. He put his hands on her shoulders to stop her.

"Babe, you have got to stop for a minute. Ever wonder why you slept this long? Did it ever occur to you that you’ve been running on empty," he asked her quietly. She sat back down on the bed silently as she considered his words.

“How long did I sleep today, total,” she asked him.

“What, from last night or daytime?” He wanted to make sure he told her the right info.

“Daytime, I know roughly when woke up this morning, after a lazy long sleep. Thank you for that, by the way,” she grinned up at him.

“I would say roughly nine hours today. You’ve been asleep all afternoon, and were awake for maybe a couple hours total in the morning. What does that tell you?”

“Either that I don’t get enough sleep or I’m sick or I’m pregnant. You choose.”

“Let’s stick with the first one for now, thanks.” The thought of her being pregnant with his baby made his mouth dry and his heart stop.

“How do we fix not getting enough sleep, with the travel schedule as it is,” she asked him.

“I’m not sure we can do much about that, but we can make sure you get some decent rest when you’re home, even if I have to come over here and put you to bed, every night.”

“That sounds awful,” she grinned at him. “Pizza, greasy, bad for me, take out pizza.” Mike frowned at her, since he had no idea what she was talking about. She rolled her eyes at him and sighed.

“Dinner. You asked me a while ago and that’s what I want for dinner. I’ve been really bad sleeping all day so let’s top it off with pizza. Just make my side vegetarian and I’m set,” she said with a satisfied smirk.
