What day was it, Carrie wondered aloud. Oh, yeah, Thursday. Thursday morning of the world’s longest week. Thinking back on the last few days made her brain hurt. She had a new appreciation for all the stay at home moms. She knew it was hard work, but figuring out the logistics of all the after school activities was exhausting. Baseball practice, choir rehearsal, study night, and who knew what else they didn’t tell her about because they didn’t want her to freak out. At least she was able to take Louise up on her offer of feeding them every night. That was a godsend to her and the kids. No one wanted to have to eat her questionable cooking, her microwave cooking, and drive through food wasn’t something she was fond of either.

Now that the kids were off to school this morning, she could make some of her much needed phone calls to get this weekend figured out. But first, more coffee. Grabbing her third mug of coffee, she grabbed her cell and portable and found her favorite spot on the couch. What was that on the floor? Oh, one of Mikie’s toys. She scooped it up and returned it to “his room”. She smiled to herself, thinking that she never would’ve believed it was possible for her to have a house full of kids and enjoy it a few years ago. She loved her nieces and nephew more than she thought she ever could. They made her smile, Liz with her constant singing and trying to figure out how to be a cool teenager. Ha, that was something she could relate to, she’d been there for a long time when she was in school. Kris was very good at helping her decided what felt right and trying to find her own way. She, on the other hand, was a little lost when it came giving direction, any direction, to a teenage girl. She just let her talk about whatever was on her mind and gave her input when asked. It was rare when Liz asked her input on anything important. She guessed Liz figured out that Auntie Carrie wasn’t very good at that kind of stuff. Lucky for her, Liz didn’t seem to hold it against her. Thinking back to Mikie brought a smile, as she tried to sip her too hot coffee. That little boy is gonna be hell on earth when he grows up, she mused. He was a big kid, much bigger than any other kid his age, almost as tall as she was already, but then that wasn’t too hard. He was a good kid, good student, but painfully shy at times. When he felt comfortable, look out. The real Mikie made his appearance. The real Mikie was a goofy, happy, smart kid. He was always trying out his new jokes on her. Some were pretty funny, some weren’t but he liked to try them, so she let him. He learned early on that Auntie Carrie doesn’t think it’s funny to have frogs in her kitchen sink. Lucky for David and Kris, they had pretty good kids, she thought as she sipped her coffee, working up to making the first call.

Okay, stop putting it off, just do it. She flipped open her portable for the number, took a deep breath and dialed. Stupid Bitch answered on the fourth ring. What was her name again? Think, hurry!

“Mr. McMahon’s office, how may I help you?”

“This is Carrie Martin, I was wondering if he is available?”

“Ms. Martin? Well I doubt that he is, let me check.”

“Thanks, Marlena.” Thank god she remembered. Oh, lovely elevator music. When did they start using that? She sat through one complete muzak’d version of Highway to Hell before she realized Marlena had probably forgotten about her. She wasn’t sure if it was deliberate or if she really had just forgotten. She disconnected and tried again.

“Mr. McMahon’s office, how may I help you?”

“Hi Marlena, This is Carrie Martin, I was on hold for a while, wondering if Mr. McMahon is available.” She kept her voice even and almost polite. Click. What the fuck? Did that bitch just hang up on her? Nice day to you too, stupid bitch. She knew why Vince kept her around, but she really shouldn’t be allowed to speak. She looked up a different number and dialed, shaking her head.

“World Wrestling Entertainment, how may I direct your call?” She thought she recognized that honey coated southern voice.

“Natalie? This is Carrie Martin. I’m trying to get in touch with Mr. Shane, is he available?”

“Carrie, how are you? You know you don’t have to go through me to get to him. You should try Marlena first.”

“I did and she hung up on me. How are you, by the way?”

“She still doesn’t like you? I’m good, kids are great, growing like weeds and trying to eat me out of house and home. You know what I mean,” she chuckled.

“Yeah I do know. My niece and nephew can go through my cupboards and it looks like locusts have been through.”

“I haven’t seen you in a long time, when you coming this way again? We need to go and find trouble.”

“Ha, yes we do. Last time it found us. I’m not sure of the scheduling, it’s one of the reasons I’m trying to get in touch with Shane. David’s got some family stuff happening.”

“Oh baby. I hope it’s not serious?”

“Eh, it is. But things seem to be getting better.”

“Oh sweetie, let them know I’ll be praying for them. Mr. Shane’s in his office right now, so let me connect you.”

“Thanks Natalie, you’re the best. Talk to you soon, bye.” Take another deep breath, and remember to breathe. This is gonna be easy. Sure it is.

“This is Shane.”

“Shane. This is Carrie Martin and I”

“Carrie! Good to hear from you. I haven’t talked to you in a while. How you doing, pretty lady?” She could hear his smile in his voice.

“Well, I thought I’d let you know my intentions to enter the diva search.” There was quiet on the other end for a moment as he absorbed the unexpected piece of news.

“Um, that’s great news Carrie, but you don’t have to do that. I’ve told you many times that you just say the word and we’ll get you on TV.”

She started chuckling, “Shane, you’re just too easy. You know that? There is no way I’d be in the diva search. You know what I think of the whole concept.”

“You had me going there. Not that I wouldn’t mind finally getting to see you in your bra and panties.” She could tell from his tone that he was telling the truth. He had never made any secret of it.

“Back to reality, Shane. Sorry.”

“Dad would never have believed me anyway. That’s a cruel thing to do to me before lunch. Oh well, what can I do for you, Carrie?”

“I’m calling about this weekend and David.”

“Okay, what’s up?”

“Not sure how informed you are of what’s going on with the guys, but his youngest is in hospital and not quite ready to come home.”

“Hunter said something about that, but wasn’t sure of any other details.”

“She’s turned the corner and is getting better, but isn’t expected home until sometime this weekend. She’s just two years old and he wants to be there.”

“That’s understandable. Tell him not to worry about it. We’ll make some adjustments. What about Monday night?”

“I think you can count on him to be there. He knows what’s at stake.”

“Okay. So, when am I going to see you again, pretty lady?”

“If the rumors that I’m getting a whiff of are true, sooner than what I had planned.”

“Now who would be spreading rumors? You never know what’s going to happen in this business. I guess we’ll all have to wait and see.” He was smiling again, she could hear.

“Okay, thanks for your help with David, Shane. No matter what anybody else says, you’re great.” She was laughing.

“Hey, that’s not very nice. But then, I never did think you were nice. Talk to you soon and tell Dave to take all the time he needs.”

“Thanks, Shane, bye.”

Shit, he had just about confirmed the rumors without coming right out and saying it. Damn. She had purposely avoided the dual brand shows for a very specific reason. Don’t worry about things you can’t do anything about. Now to call the rest of the ‘family’. She really shouldn’t drink any more coffee. So, with her empty mug in front of her on the table, she dialed Hunter and Nan’s house to let them know the latest. Hunter answered and absorbed David’s family and schedule news without interrupting her.

“Have you talked to him recently?”

“No, we thought it would be better if he just focused on Melissa and getting her home,” he said quietly.

“Okay, but I don’t think he’d mind talking to you. He’s had a lot of time to just sit and wait.”

“How is Kris holding up?”

“Better than him, actually.”

“Uh, okay. I’ll call and leave a message so he can call when he’s up to it.”

“Sounds like a good idea. Will you let Mr. um, Rick know?”

“Of course,” he smiled at her slip up. “How’s the eye?”

“Very pretty. Technicolor green and blue today. Don’t know what color it’ll be by Monday.”

“I can’t wait to see it. So, we’ll see you guys on Monday, if all goes well?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay”

“Say hi to Nan for me.”

“I will, bye.”

That didn’t go so bad now did it? She really liked Hunter and Rick, when they were away from the ring. She knew both could be ruthless in the ring. She had grown up watching Rick Flair so she knew that side if him all too well.

Damn, if Shane’s hints had been right, she’d have to deal with that other business. No good worrying about it now. Need to let David know of the change so he can keep his focus at home.

“David?”

“Yeah,” he growled at her. Not a good start to the phone call.

“You have all weekend off, they said to take your time, but they’re hoping you can make it for Monday.”

“Did I ask you to make those changes? No. So if you don’t mind, let me deal with my life right now. Butt out.” He disconnected. She stared at her phone for a moment, not sure what that was all about.

They had little contact with each other over the last few days. Yeah, she answered when he would call to talk to the kids, but that was about it. She’d talked to Kris a lot and that was how she knew what was going on. Kris had asked her to make the changes, but she must have forgotten to tell David. He had been silent on the plane ride back home. She knew he needed time, time to think. She fell asleep on the flight, so she didn’t know if he got any rest.

She recalled several years ago, thanks to some very sage advice from his longtime buddy and business partner Mike, David had incorporated himself. No one knew at the time what the future would hold, but it did give him rights to his own name, image and marketing, etc. At the time, he was wrestling in school gymnasiums, so it wasn’t that important. But now, the control that he wielded over his own image was almost unheard of for a WWE employee. She remembered Vince McMahon’s displeasure, yeah that was a nice way to put it, when he learned that David’s likeness was already licensed, by himself. Vince knew where the money was, and it was in all those little merchandising deals. So, an agreement was struck to enable Vince to use David’s likeness, on WWE merchandise. She knew Vince wasn’t happy about it, but also knew there wasn’t a thing he could do about it. Mike was a treasure, she thought.

Knowing she had several more calls to make to get all this stuff straightened out, partly due to that independence, she opened her ‘fridge hoping for some kind of edible to jump out at her. It didn’t, so she grabbed some string cheese and a water bottle. Next call was to Weasel. He worked on all things related to Batista and the web, so he should know of the change, plus let him know of the possible change according to Shane’s hints.

“Hi Carla, how are you feeling?”

“I’m definitely feeling like a beached whale, honey. But other than that and the fact I haven’t seen my toes in months, great. Any news today?”

Carrie gave her the most recent update on Melissa, as she knew it. She loved Carla and her practical down to earth approach to life. She and Wease were getting ready for their second child, doctors had said it was a son, but they had said that last time too and been wrong, so...

“Let’s hope the doctors are right about the timing of this one, I’m done,” Carla said tiredly.

“Yeah, I can imagine. Is Wease around? Is he busy? I’d like to chat with him if possible.”

“He’s here, but I don’t think he’s overly busy, other than making me a snack. Here he is,” Carla said as she handed the phone to her helpful mate. He handed her the interesting sandwich of her choice.

“What’s up Care,” her brother asked.

“I just got off the phone with Shane O-Mac and he almost confirmed those rumors we have been hearing, so I thought you’d want to know to get a jump on a possible re-design if needed.”

“No shit? Okay. What else?”

“You can always tell, can’t you? David is home this weekend, but is scheduled to be there Monday, as it stands right now.”

Okay, I’ll make the change. Anything else?”

“No, not right now. But if Monday doesn’t fly, I’ll let you know as soon as I do.”

“Cool, see you on Tuesday?”

Tuesday she thought, what the hell is on Tuesday? Oh yeah. “Of course, I’ll be there help celebrate my baby brother’s birthday. Wouldn’t miss it.”

“You forgot, didn’t you” he asked his older sister. She was always forgetting his birthday.

“No, just temporarily, that’s all. That doesn’t count.” She smiled as she thought of her brother and some of his previous birthdays.

“What ever you say. See you then.” She forgot and he knew it. She probably flipped open her portable to see what was happening on that day. He wasn’t going to give her shit about it yet.

“K, I’ll keep you posted of any changes. Bye.”

Now, the last call to make. He always seemed to make her nervous over the phone, she wasn’t sure why. It’s not like he was mean to her, usually the exact opposite. He was damn hot with a body to die for. She just got nervous and stupid around him. A lot like high school, she admitted to herself. But it only seemed to happen over the phone. Didn’t make any sense, but it always happened. Taking a big swig of water to make sure she didn’t trip over her lips and embarrass herself more than normal, she dialed his number.

“Yeah, this is Mike.”

“Hi Mike, Carrie here. Just wanted to update you on this weekend’s schedule change”. Stick to what you know so you don’t say anything stupid, she thought.

“There’s a change? I talked to Dave this morning and he didn’t say anything about it.”

He had a great voice, she though to herself. She could picture him talking to her, standing up as soon as he answered the phone, and pacing back and forth. She’d seen him do it so many times, it was easy to visualize. She was so busy imagining what he might be wearing, or not wearing she didn’t hear his next comment.

“Huh? What was that?”

“I said when did this change happen,” he repeated patiently.

“This morning, after I made some calls. Kris asked me to get him removed from this weekend’s shows last night, but it was too late by then.”

“So Kris asked you? Not Dave? That would explain why he didn’t say anything about it to me, he probably didn’t know.”

“I kinda got that feeling this morning when he bit my head off, yeah.”

“What? That’s not like him. What did you say to get him to do that?” He was confused by his buddy’s reported actions; they were so out of character for him.

“Just informed him he had this weekend off and they were cool about it.” Keep drinking your water, you’ll make it through this is you keep drinking your water, she kept repeating to herself.

“That doesn’t sound like too big a deal.” Carrie could hear Mike’s concern for his long time friend in his tone, it came through loud and clear.

“Mike, did David talk to you about Tucson at all?” She was hoping maybe he had.

“A little. Mostly about dragging your ass into Hooters,” he chuckled.

“Oh, okay.” Not about anything else. Damn. She had hoped he would talk to Mike about the other stuff.

“Why? Anything else I need to know? You guys did make it to see Angela, right?” he verified.

“Yeah, she loved her new shirt and poster, thanks. It made us late, but it was worth it.”

“Cool. I’ll make some minor adjustments to some things and see you Tuesday.” Tuesday? What the hell was happening again, she thought. “Carrie, you still there?”

“Yeah, just trying to do too many things at once, sorry.” Yeah right, like think and talk at the same time. Oh yeah, now she remembered. “Wouldn’t miss the party, unless Carla decides to upstage him.”

“Yeah, that could happen, couldn’t it?” he realized. Only if we make her run, she thought.

“Doubtful, she’s still got a little while yet, so we should be set for Tuesday. See you then, bye.”

Mike was left holding the now quiet phone and looking at it as he shook his head. He knew she was smarter than any of them and very organized. He had seen her tackle some ridiculous tasks and do them easily, when he would’ve been still scratching his head about where to start. Why did she always come across as a ditz when they talked on the phone? Dave never said she was that way. Who could understand women? He obviously didn’t. Lisa had always told him that.

She managed to hang up before she started beating herself up and swearing. Damn, damn damn, did you have to think of him in shorts and no shirt walking around? Well, it could have been in no shorts and that would have made it worse. She was such an idiot. Why did she even think about it, he was with the Lovely Lisa. That’s how she always thought of her. She was taller than her, blonder than her and gorgeous. They had been together since school and appeared that they were going to be together until the end of time. He really loved her and she, him, so why even think about it? Just for fun, was her immediate answer. I must be getting sick or something, she thought. Maybe it was just being around all those damn fine guys, week in, week out walking around in less than their underwear most of the time. She smiled. That was one of the perks of the job, don’t kid yourself. You loved it and you know it.

She found herself sitting on the edge of her couch, trying to do some work on her portable, music playing quietly in the background. He was sitting directly behind her on the couch with his legs wrapped around her. She could feel his desire pressed into her back. He stroked her arm, causing her to mistype a few words. She grumbled to him to wait, she just had a few more things to take care of. He was quiet, but insistent. He lifted her hair off her neck and started to gently kiss her behind her ear. She was trying hard to concentrate on getting this last email out. It’s wasn’t working, she wasn’t going to be able to get this done if he kept that up. He started to nibble on her neck and continued his nibbling all the way to her shoulder and back again to her neck. She sighed, in spite of herself. Just a little bit more, you can finish this girl. He brought his free hand forward to brush lightly across her already sensitive nipples, making sure to brush over them several times, while nibbling on her neck. Oh god, she couldn’t concentrate, he was going to win this time. Maybe just finish, just a few more. He slid his hand from her breasts down to stoke her belly. She groaned in anticipation of what was to come.

She woke up with a start. What the hell was that? Who was that? God, she needed to find that man in her dream so he could finish the task at hand, she thought wickedly. She never gets to see his face, which makes it very interesting, but she had a very good picture of his arms, legs and other very interesting parts. The whole do it yourself thing was fine, but it just wasn’t the same. A lot like paint by numbers was how she always thought of it. Close but not as good as the real thing. She needed to look at the travel schedule and figure out a night that she could go play and find someone to play with. Shit, if she didn’t, she wasn’t going to be able to concentrate on the simple stuff soon.

David was on his own for Monday, but that was an easy day for him. She had heard that both he & Hunter were only making in ring appearances, not having matches. That was a good idea, she wondered if Hunter had ensured it. Probably, he was a good guy, no matter what he said. She was traveling with the boys the entire week, next time, since there were so many appearances scheduled. So, she’d have to deal with the paint by numbers method for a while longer. Oh well, she was big girl and Mr. Insistent, whoever he was, was a nice daydream.
