“Nan, please before you ask me any questions I have to make at least one phone call, not related to this shit at all.” Carrie was reaching for her phone as she spoke. Nan nodded her understanding, knowing that the telling of that bruise was going to take a while, so no hurry. It gave her a chance to get up and rearrange her blanket better, among other things.

Carrie waited until Nan had left to use the ladies room before she hit talk. The phone was answered on the first ring.

“Louise, it’s Carrie again…Any news?...When?... Oh, okay…Well that’s good news, isn’t it?...No, I haven’t told him yet…Kris asked me not to until we had some info to give him …Yes, I understand….How are you holding up?...The kids asleep yet?...I knew they’d wear you out, they do me too….Um, okay…I…I…will tell him and make the arrangements, yes….I have heard of it, but you know it …well…I don’t know…yes, we’re all praying too…I’ll call once we arrive…okay, just go straight there?...Okay….You take care too and see you soon…bye, love you too Mrs. B.”

She ended the call and stared for a moment, trying to decide what she needed to do first. Usually she had her shit so planned in advance even the kids could follow it. But now…She walked to her bag to retrieve her portable with all the info in it and spotted Nan, watching her from the door way. It was obvious from her expression she had heard most of the call. She nodded to her that it was okay to come back in. Well, I guess she’s gonna hear me make some changes in two plane reservations, Carrie thought. Damn.

Once she managed to speak to a live person and explain that she wanted to cancel or switch, she didn’t give a shit which, two reservations from tomorrow morning to tonight, it went smoothly. She managed to book a nonstop, red eye, leaving late tonight.

Nan had retreated back to the couch and watched her young friend cope with all the difficulties of getting her point across to the numbskulls that seem to staff help desks the world over with ease. It’s why she was so good at what she does with these guys. She’s a gem, (in many ways) but it’s obvious she doesn’t know it, she realized. She would have been yelling after the first minute of trying to speak slowly in small words. She waited until Carrie looked liked she was finished before she said anything.

“How can I help you hon? Or do you not want to talk about it?” Nan wasn’t sure but she had a pretty good idea about her crying earlier, it all started to make sense. The bruise, now that was a different story.

“I don’t know where to start. I…I had to change the plane reservations so David and I could get home quicker,” she started to explain. Nan smiled encouragement, not wanting to stop or interrupt her, she would tell her in her own way.

“David and Kris’s youngest daughter has been sick. They thought with the flu or ear infection or something like that. You know how all kids get that stuff all the time, nothing to worry about usually. She wasn’t getting better, in fact she seemed to be getting worse a few days ago. The family doc tried all kinds of things, and nothing seemed to even knock her fever down. She’s only two, poor little one. He tested her for all kinds of things and she wasn’t getting better and was cranky and irritable, I would be too under the circumstances. Today, the doctor’s office called and told Kris to take her straight to emergency. The doctor would meet them there.” She paused to take a deep breath and steady herself.

“Oh poor baby,” was all Nan was able to say. She was on the verge of tears, anticipating the next piece of information.

“They ran some more tests today, and finally discovered she has bacterial meningitis,” she choked the last words out with a sob. Tears were starting up again. Twice in one day wasn’t good, but she didn’t care right now.

“She’s on tons of iv fluids, tons of drugs. It’s a watch and wait game for now. We just have to hope she’s strong enough to fight this shit.” Tears were streaming down her face as she shared this piece of news with Nan.

Nan was silent, absorbing this tragic news. Then she thought back to the one sided conversation. “Dave doesn’t know?”

“He knows Melissa is sick of course, knows the doctors are idiots and couldn’t figure out why, but doesn’t know she’s in the intensive care, fighting for her life right now, no.”

“Oh, hon. Is there anything I can do, anything we can do?

“I’m not sure yet. I will tell David, but Kris told his mom to not tell him until after TV tonight. So far today I have had to hide from him the fact his baby was rushed to the hospital for more tests, his older kids are staying with his mom, his wife is so stressed she hasn’t been eating or sleeping and now this.”

“I think you and I could both use something stronger than tea,” Nan smiled to her.

“Then, to top off my day, I get this damn thing,” Carrie says pointing to her now very colorful bruised cheek and black eye. “Ever had one of those days that you just know the minute you wake up, you should just forget the whole damn day and go back to bed? That was me this morning. Then just to make myself feel even shittier, I checked my horoscope. Yeah, I know they’re full of shit, but they’re good for a morning laugh. Mine said I was only going to have a ½ star day! What the hell!? The worst I have ever seen was a 2 star day!” Carrie started to shake, but took a few deep breaths to calm herself. They sat in quiet for a few minutes.

“You want to tell me how that happened,” Nan asked.

“Not really, but you’ll enjoy it. Hell, I enjoyed getting it. It was worth it, believe me.” Carrie started her tale of the “great slap” as she called it with Christy asking the youngest guard to get her stuff and ended it with a confused Christy leaving with a warning.

“Fucking Bitch! I can’t believe you let her get away with that? I know I wouldn’t have,” Nan was furious and knew Hunter would be too.

“Ah, but she’s not too smart and won’t be able to stay away. But she’ll be so worried about Evolution’s wrath that she might actually leave the boys alone for a bit. I’m just fuckin’ with what little mind she has. If she can’t stay away, then I will beat the shit out of her. You wanna watch?”

“Hell with watching! Count me in on the beating!” Nan smiled at her, just enjoying the thought of finally getting to kick that little bitch’s ass.

“So, now you see why I didn’t tell Hunter the full story yet? It’s not that important in comparison. Will you please not tell him until we’ve flown out?” Carrie pleaded with the redhead.

“I understand. He will too, once he calms down, after hitting a few things.” Nan shook her head at the thought of the temper to come.

After a few quiet moments, there was a knock on the locker room door, and a familiar voice asked if he could come in. “Of course, as long as you don’t mind the scenery,” Carrie said with a laugh to her friend as he walked in

“Oh, so it is true,” Chris said in surprise. He looked at Carrie with worry.

“Don’t look at me like that, I’m a big girl,” she teased.

Nan thought to ask, “How did you hear.”

“Little redheaded bitch is telling everyone she beat the shit out of you,” he said simply. He could tell that hurt like hell.

“Damn it! Let’s hope the boys don’t hear that. I’m not sure we’d be able to restrain any of them if they did,” Carrie worried. At Beniot’s worried look, she shook her head and said, “I let her slap me. One time is all she gets and she just used it today.”

He didn’t quite understand her logic, but his wife was confusing to him too sometimes. He thought he would check on her, sometimes she got in a little too deep with the piranhas. This looked like one of them, and he was concerned. He didn’t want to think of Evolution’s wrath on Christy when they learned of it. He wasn’t sure how Carrie had managed to make them go eat dinner without the truth. He knew them well enough to know that if they realized Christy was behind it, she wouldn’t be seen for weeks, if not months on RAW while she licked her wounds. They’d see to it personally.

“Little one, I know you think you can handle yourself but,” Chris said to his friend.

“I’m fine, really. So tell me about the baby and how everyone’s doing,” she deftly changed the subject on him. She sincerely wanted to know how his life was going, outside the ring. She knew that it was welcome relief for most of the guys. They spent so much time away from home, talking about their work to various outlets, that it was pleasant to get a chance to talk about something that wasn’t related to work, particularly their families. The wrestlers considered themselves one big family since they were together so much, but it wasn’t quite the same. He was one of the few who hadn’t been intimated by her traveling companions and had welcomed her when she first started traveling with the boys. He had remembered her from David’s time training with him in Atlanta during his rehab, she had been pleased to recall. She had to fly down to meet with David a few times related to some business issues. They usually discussed business over dinner. David said he thought better when his stomach was full. She didn’t understand that, but he had invited Chris along once and she had met them both for dinner. He was another one of the big softies, as she thought of them. Not all the guys backstage fit that title, in fact very few did. But when she found one, she treated them with the same respect and courtesy they gave her. She remembered meeting Mr. Flair (damn, Rick) the first time. She had been so uncomfortable with calling him Rick that she didn’t call him anything at all for a long time. He knew it, so he teased her mercilessly about it. Every time she slipped and called him Mr. Flair, he called her little girl. It was just one of those things that family did, she thought with a smile, at least her family anyway. She was still tripping over calling him Rick, but he had gotten so used to calling her little girl, that is what he usually ended up calling her now.

Thinking back to her first meeting of Vince McMahon, she shuddered. Carrie remembered her first meeting with him like it was yesterday, even though it had been almost two years ago. She had done her best to keep a very low profile and not get in anyone’s way. She didn’t know it at the time, but Vince had been asking all the workers about her since she first appeared. She was just coming back from catering after finally managing to get a bite to eat when she literally ran in Vince McMahon. Luckily she didn’t have any drinks with her or he world have been wearing them, she remembered. Her mind was else where as was usual, so she wasn’t watching were she was going and ran right into him.

“Oh, excuse me.” She looked up to see who it was and tried not to show her embarrassment at running into the owner of the company.

“Are you alright, Miss? Miss. I’m sorry I don’t know your name.” he had asked her politely.

“Ms. Martin, Carrie Martin. Yes, I’m fine. I’m so sorry for that, I don’t know where my brain was,” she managed to say without sounding too stupid.

Vince smiled at her and said something to the effect of, “that’s quite alright young lady,” Just as she was ready to get the hell out of there, he spoke up again. “Um, you work for Dave Batista, right?”

She was surprised that he knew that. “I work with Dave Batista, yes,” she corrected him automatically.

He noticed the reply and smiled to himself thinking, damn, who is this woman and we need to sign her. I need to sign her. Yeah, it sure would be fun having her as an employee. Wonder what it would take to get her to sign and how long would it take to bend that spirit to his liking, he mused.

Carrie had noticed his silence, but didn’t have any idea what was going on behind his predatory smile.

“What would it take to get you to come work for me,” he asked in a deceptively mild tone. She blinked, and spoke with out thought to the consequences.

“There isn’t enough money in the world,” she said quickly, knowing she needed to nip that thought in the bud.

This little one does have some fire in her, good, very good. He loved the thrill of the hunt. “I could pay you more than Batista is, hell I could probably double, no triple what he’s paying you.” He was used to getting what he wanted and he wanted this one.

“David doesn’t pay me enough either, but then I’m not here for the money.” She had finally realized where he was going with this and she really didn’t want to have this conversation with him. He was confused by her answer, it didn’t make sense. Everyone had a price, he knew. He just had to find out what hers was.

“I want to put you on TV,” he said, thinking that’s what most wanted to hear.

She lifted her chin and looked him straight in the eyes, put her hands over her breasts and laughed. “Mr. McMahan, me and the girls are fine just the way we are. I don’t want to get improved to be on TV, I don’t want to be on TV, period.”

She was pleased that she had managed to say that while keeping her composure. He reeled back and reassessed her. He wasn’t used to being told no and he didn’t really know how to take it. She’s got fire alright. I want this one, were his thoughts.

“You surprise me, everyone likes to get something for free,” he knew. All the other ladies had been happy to get the enhancements that were required to be on TV.

“Obviously you haven’t met me before. I don’t want to be on TV, not now or ever. Why is that so had to understand” she asked the owner of the company.

“I just don’t believe it, that’s why,” he said honestly.

“Look, you’ve got enough people around you blowing smoke up your ass, so I’m not going to bother, Why don’t you understand that I wouldn’t to lie to you about this,” she was getting irritated she knew and wasn’t able to keep it from her voice.

He heard what she said, but he didn’t believe her. He was a patient man when it suited him, and it suited him, with her.

“Excuse me,” she said, embarrassed at what she had said to him, and quickly walked back to the relative safety of Evolution’s locker room. She was proud of the fact that she didn’t run. He watched her go, but knew he’d run into to her again. He’d make sure of it.

Randy had noticed the expression on her face when she entered the locker room after her run in with Vince. She looked a lot like Hunter did when he was pissed and wanted to hit something. He must be rubbing off on her, he thought.

“What’s up Big Sis,” he asked with his usual goofy grin. He was the only one who called her that since she was older than him. It didn’t matter that he was at least a foot taller, he enjoyed calling her that.

“What? Oh, I just ran into Vince McMahon, literally,” she said. Unsure if she wanted to share her embarrassment about the whole encounter yet, she didn’t elaborate.

“Oh,” he said. Not sure why she’d be pissed about that, but was curious so he asked, “and that’s a bad thing because?”

“Because he’s an arrogant asshole,” she snapped back at him. The rest of Evolution focused on the two at her outburst.

“You’re just now learning this,” Rick asked her incredulously.

“Well no. I knew it before, but I’ve managed to stay away from him,” she admitted.

“What happened,” David asked, feeling his temper start to rise. He was supposed to be protecting her and it was going to be a challenge if Vince was on her scent, he knew. Vince’s exploits and appetites were legendary. Hunter stirred beside him also, for similar reasons. All of Evolution looked out for her and considered it a source of pride that no one messed with her, unless they wanted to mess with them first. It was unspoken between all of them, but they understood.

“He offered to put me on TV,” she said, embarrassed by the thought.

“Congratulations. So now we can have our sister join our on screen party,” Randy said. He really would like to see her beat the crap out of some of those women, he already a couple had in mind. He was smiling just thinking about it.

“I told him no thanks. Me and the girls weren’t interested in any enhancements,” she said repeating the same gesture she had used with Vince, so her meaning was clear.

Hunter laughed at her phrase asking, “How did he take that?” He knew Vince didn’t like to be told no.

“Um not well. He didn’t believe me,” she admitted. “He’s used to getting his own way, isn’t he?”

“Yeah,” Hunter said quietly. Now what were they going to do, he worried. Vince could be a major pain in the ass if he didn’t get what he wanted, but they were not going to sacrifice Carrie to the cause.

She could see that Randy was stunned that she turned him down. He’s still got some growing up to, don’t forget, she reminded herself. She missed the look that three older men shared with each other.
